This week I read three articles for class plus a fourth that interested me. You can learn more about what I got from each in my last blog post, but today I want to concentrate on the article “Envisioning AI for K-12” by Touretsky et. al (2019). Mainly, the authors stick to 5 “Big Ideas” in AI: (1) Computers perceive the world using sensors, (2) Agents maintain models of the world for reasoning, (3) Computers learn from data, (4) Making agents interact comfortably with humans is a substantial challenge for AI developers, and (5) AI applications can impact society in positive and negative ways. The article didn’t go far in depth on the 5 big ideas though I thought it would when I chose this article to blog about. The article concludes with a call to action for K-12 educators to be informed about AI.
Overall I found the article helpful as a starter piece of information, one I wish I’d had earlier in the semester when I was deciding whether or not to use AI. As it is, I’m just coming around to AI’s side, getting help on some assignments, with tailored questions and strict guidelines. AI can definitely be helpful as an assist.
AI is not applicable to what I want to study as a whole, another reason I’ve discounted it until now. But reading more about it and understanding its capabilities is definitely helping me on my academic journey.
