This week I read and will write on the article, “Advancing creativity theory and research” by Glaveanu, Hanchett, et. al (2020). A self-described manifesto, or “written statement of beliefs and aims” (Glaveanu et. al 2020), the article is from many researchers on the topic of advancing creativity theory / research rather than dismissing what’s already been posited and written. The article starts with two claims: one, that information to post-information society is happening at a fast pace; and two, to propose a generative list, socio-cultural theory in which it’s okay to argue and develop. The authors next go into eleven subsections, or postulates, ranging in potency. The first is wide-reaching: creativity is psychological, social, and material. They integrate dimensions for new perspectives. Next, creativity is culturally mediated action that integrates cognition and ideation. Next, creative action is relational at all times and cannot rely on others solely. Next, creativity is meaningful to existence. Next, creativity is fundamental for society: building and developing society is a creative act. Next, creativity is situated but its expression displays same and different across domains and situations: creative action is always unique. Next, creativity needs specification: intrinsically complex, studies must measure within a discipline. Next, creativity research needs to consider power dynamics of researchers and their disparities. Creativity studies need both qualitative and quantitative methodologies with strongly ground theory; this asks the question, how can creativity be quantified and reflect on it in theory at the same time? Next, old literature should be revised not abandoned: become aware of blind spots; get a new angle. Finally, creativity researchers have a social responsibility to portray agency, society, and culture through their work and to use social involvements.
In all honesty, I found this week’s readings fascinating. I like the idea of creativity as it applies to theory anyway, and now seeing it applied and discussed in light of its dynamics, my interest is further piqued. It is something I hope to weave into my doctoral thesis and future writings. I’m just sad to be discovering it so late in the semester!
